18 Free & Useful Road Travel iPhone Apps!

Published on by Katya in the category nerding, travel | 2 Comments

Before we left on our trip we knew internet and phone were going to be huge deciding factors on our trip. Neither of us can work without internet every day, all day, and Ross has regular phone meetings that require decent cell reception. With our iPhones came AT&T and no other options. I got my phone refurbished for $99, an 8gig 3G and Ross got the newer 16gig 3GS. So far, we haven’t noticed significant differences between them.

For internet we have an AT&T USB internet device and a Verizon wifi hotspot (our second after Sprint’s service didn’t work out). If anyone cares to know, for traveling, Verizon has the BEST coverage for phone and internet – like the commercials say – 5 times better than AT&T. We learned the hard way, having not had TV in years and not listening to radio ads closely enough, we probably would have got Verizon for cell service as well. At the time, you couldn’t get an iPhone without AT&T unless it was used and jailbroken – which at the time I didn’t know enough about to trust.

I am always in the passenger seat since I don’t have a drivers license which by default makes me the navigator. While we are driving, if I’m not working, I am looking up information and weather at our next destination. Making an attempt to become somewhat informed about the place and maybe even have the place mapped out in my head. By the time we get to a town, I know where we can eat, what there is to do, where we can buy groceries, what the weather will be like all week, what our cell/internet reception will be like and maybe even why the town is called Bubsville for example.

I decided after two friends this year bought or got the iTouch for Christmas, that I would make a list of travel apps while it was fresh in my mind. They are not in a particular order except ones I use most often. I dont see a point in rating them – if they have issues – I will not hold back telling you.

First, Google Maps of course. This app comes with the iPhone and iTouch and although we have GPS (TomTom) in the RV, it has proven instrumental in finding places that either the GPS cannot find by name or provides a map view of a search, unlike GPS, letting you see things in relativity to you and each other – rather than a list that only tells you how far away from you things are.  GPS is also only updated every so often and is nowhere near as thorough of a search though sometimes it will surprise you. When you cant find a place on GPS by name you can search Google Maps for the location which will give you an address. If you can’t find a place on Google Maps but know generally where it is,  you can drop a pin by clicking the peeling paper in the bottom right and drag it where you want it. If its on a road, Google will tell you the location of your dropped pin, which you can then type into GPS. Do NOT by AT&T GPS if you plan to leave a major city, unfortunately iPhone GPS just isn’t dependable enough and often lags (when you need to know what your next turn is this is a no), even Google Maps gets stuck sometimes and thinks you’re in a field or the center of town – so paying for GPS that is hardly better than the free map service isn’t worth it.

Other advantages of Google Maps is Satellite and Hybrid view which will show you the topography of the region and in cases where you are really lost, you can find buildings, RV parks and even the street view of the place you are going (in a town or city – not state parks or country roads). We have many times found RV parks by looking at the satellite view and seeing a row of RV’s from space. We find most of our State Parks and RV parks though Google Maps as well as anything like vets, propane and parks for Chena to play in.

Weather is an obvious necessary app. We ran from snow storms and 18 degree nights for weeks thanks to this built in feature. It’s pretty self explanatory.

The apps I use second most often is probably a toss up between Around Me (download), Yelp (download) and Urban Spoon (download). They all do similar things in different ways.

Yelp (download) is just like the website, generally. You can find places and see their ratings – unlike Urban Spoon, it has more than just food and unlike Around Me, it has the reviews. Yelp has however gotten us lost a couple times and it’s best to confirm with Google Maps and maybe even call a place before betting money. Yelp does have a live feed though where local reviews for places pop up as a list and you can bookmark favorite places to check them out later. They also have a Talk feature where you can post or answer local questions about places to find things or just use the Nearby option to find anything near you in set categories. Retailers can also post coupons and sales on the Yelp website which show up as a category in the Nearby page giving you an edge in shopping or eating cheap.

Around me (download) will let you search many categories or use an open search for places in your area. You can search a list that tells you the address and how many miles it is or view it as a map with pins on it. They are pretty up to date on what business are actually still around, a problem you run into allot while traveling the US we’ve found. There is a category called Nearby that will tell you a short history of towns around you.

Urban Spoon (download) is strictly food as you can guess. You can search by type of food, places near you and unlike Google Maps or Around Me, you can see the price range, reviews, ratings and sometimes menus. The restaurant page has the phone number, address and a link to the map or website if they have one. Once on the map, you can send it to Google Maps which will show were you are relative to the restaurant and plan your trip there.

Going Away Party

Published on by Katya in the category nerding | Leave a comment

So we planned a party for the Friday before we left, calling it an “RV Party” but sadly the RV was in the shop still getting its carburetor rebuilt (for the second time). I guess this was pretty discouraging because no one showed up. We didnt really know anyone in Portland anyway, Ross had his coworkers and guitar teacher, but most of the people I knew moved away or we grew apart. While we waited we knew it wouldn’t go so well so we recorded it and made it fun. Most the snacks got eaten anyway and I had plenty to drink so no loss. The night before we left we tried the party again and 6 of Ross’s coworkers and his guitar teacher, Joe came by. That time we actually had the RV but no recordings sorry. It wouldnt have been as funny as us sitting around sad at our own party.

School on the Road

So I started school Monday. I wasn’t going to go this term but I would like to get closer to finishing my degree and just get it over with. I have a fairly relaxed degree, especially since I’m nearing the end. Somehow switching colleges I got around many of those terrible “basic education” classes – what colleges in the US consider what is basically High-school review (math, science, history etc).

I have switched my major many many times and settled on one that encompassed the majority of my credits. I started in Graphic Design, then Journalism, Art, Web Development, Film – minors in photography, Spanish and even Arabic and have now settled on Arts and Letters with no minor. It’s basically a degree that takes all my art, photography, writing and film classes and shoves them into a mishmash. Whatever. I’ll have a Bachelors of arts with skills in lots of things so that works just fine. I’ll be finishing at just over $50k so.. I think I’m done. If I choose a specific major now, I’d owe 64k before I finish and be stuck in Portland for another year or so.

This term I have 2 film classes, Politics in Film, a political science class – American Film History, a collection of great great films that I’ve already seen and already written papers about (but nevertheless will be useful) and Intro to Science Fiction Writing. The writing class should be interesting since I haven’t had a creative writing class since high-school. I will probably opt to use one of my freakishly entertaining nightly dreams as the base of a story for the class. I may or may not post my film reviews (critical ones not “this film is about this and sucks” reviews) and fiction writing attempts on this blog, maybe once we have the categories sectioned out.

I will also be studying my Spanish a few hours a week and try to get my verbs dead set in my head in all forms with no doubt. I’ve taken 4 years of classes, lived in south America a year and have friends in Mexico who speak no English but verbs still make me change the way I say things sometimes – which is really annoying. If they didn’t have so many forms for every freakin verb it wouldn’t bother me. Anyway, I may also be teaching Ross along the way which I think will be really fun and a good way to keep me motivated to study.

New Travel Camera: Pentax K20d

Published on by Katya in the category nerding, photography | Leave a comment

I’m really into photography. It’s basically the only thing I spend any large chunks of money on before the RV. Cameras, film, scanner, developing supplies, hi def monitor, lighting equipment, frames etc etc and it isn’t about to end just because I live in an RV. I’m pretty loyal to film (and no, I don’t and wont have the digital film argument with you) but I’ve known for a while that I need a digital SLR for blogging and occasionally work. Since I am a film person and have been a photographer for 12 years now I have trouble settling for what a point and shoot digital camera gives me. Long story short. I got a Pentax K20D!

Pentax K20d

Pentax K20d

I’m still learning all the hundreds of settings and playing with what it’s capabilities but so far I’m impressed! In all my stubborn film brained thinking, I really didn’t think a digital could impress me. I don’t aim for “stock photography”, studio/advertising photography or wedding photography and since I associate these things with digital, I have just avoided it. I was amazed that I could change the settings enough to make the photos look like I wanted and wasn’t stuck with “ridiculously clear and perfect” which I find fairly boring in most cases. Basically, If I wanted an exact replica of reality I would use a digital camera, if I wanted a photo that had mood and emotion, interesting tones and light – personality, I would use film. So far, even though I haven’t gotten out as much as I wanted to take photos, I’m seeing its capabilities to do both.

The first problem I ran into was using manual lenses with the camera. I didn’t get the camera with a lens because I already have a pile of Pentax lenses and why would I pay extra for a lens I don’t want. At first I freaked out a little but knew it was illogical for a company to make a digital camera that doesn’t use manual lenses if they ever wanted fans of their brand to stick with them. I found a blog that explained how but I lost it so I’ll let you know here too!

Basically, assuming you have the Pentax K20d, you need to find your menu button. got it? Scroll left to the C (Custom Setting) Scroll up to the bottom of the list, #36: Using aperture ring, select, scroll to #2: Permitted and you are a go. Really, that’s it. Sad thing is people have actually sold the camera because they thought this wasn’t possible. It’s probably in the manual for those of you that read those, I don’t usually but I may for this crazy thing.

Other things I like about it so far are its ability to use my lenses to their fullest ability. The DOF is spot on with the focus assist light, so nice to have as my eyes get crappier and crappier and whether using vivid, natural, black and white or whichever, you can customize them all with saturation, contrast, sharpness and more. I was able to make black and white photos look quite filmy by bumping the contrast and lowering the sharpness a little.

I really really need to get caught up on work and get out to take more photos with it but here are a couple so far – just testing it’s settings and such so don’t expect too much quite yet.

I can now blog with quality photos, here and on my other sites www.street-fashion.net and www.antibsl.com. An occasional fashion photography or portrait job wouldn’t be bad either. The possibilities are endless!

My other cameras, all film, include. Pentax 67 medium format. Pentax pz1p 35mm. 3 Brownie cameras, 127 and med format. A Lomo Smena 8, Holga, Polaroid (peel apart type) and a 110speed SLR. Trying to keep my collection smaller in the RV but that’s it at its minimum I think. I just donated a Duaflex, Brownie and some random accessories. My photography is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/lostlogo/sets/ and on my website at www.lostlogodesign.com.

New Kidrobot Friends

Published on by Katya in the category nerding | Leave a comment

One other kind of nerd I am that I didn’t mention in my “About me” page, is a Kidrobot toy nerd. Well, you can call them toys but they’re actually little works of art. Often the Dunnies, the ones I collect the most, are replicas of an artist painted original – so something like a print of art. They are however much cheaper than a print (in most cases) and they’re much freakin cuter. I have about 30 Dunnies, just a few Smorking Labbits and several various series members. This may sound like babble and nonsense to most of you but I’m posting photos of the newest members of my collection anyway. Ross sent me a care package from Portland, full of awesome rain-forest coffee, my Italian press, my skull and bones ice tray, Mexican gum I bought in Mexico, my Groucho Marx nose/glasses I like to wear when being serious and 2 surprise toys! (almost all Kidrobot toys come in mystery boxes with pictures on the side of what you could possibly get). These series are new to me, “Fortune Pork – Mini plush toys”  and “BoOoya Ghosts”.
